Pierre-Victor DAUTEL (1873-1951). "Peasant driving his horses", bas-relief in plaster (122 x 41 cm) This bas-relief is probably a cast or model of the stone bas-relief placed on the building of the Place de la République (n°5) in Cambrai. This building, built in 1934 by the architect Marc Delattre, houses the Crédit Agricole and has four bas-reliefs on the theme of agriculture: a woman holding a sheaf of wheat, peasants and oxen, a man sowing and a peasant and horses. Pierre-Victor Dautel is a sculptor and medallist, initially trained in Valenciennes, his birthplace, he continued his studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a student of Louis-Ernest Barrias (1845-1901). In 1902 he was awarded the first Grand Prix de Rome and spent three years at the Villa Medici. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes has a portrait of Pierre-Victor Dautel by Lucien Jonas.
