FRENCH SCHOOL - First half of the 17th century - Lot 271
FRENCH SCHOOL - First half of the 17th century The two arrows or the dangers of Love. Cupid emerges from the woods to strike a young man in love with a beautiful woman with one of his darts, and is struck down near his lute; on the right, an old man courts her, while a little monkey chases him away, scattering his golden Louis, and Death, lurking in the foliage, prepares to shoot him with a fatal arrow. At his feet, a little dog symbolizes fidelity, and a burning candle represents both the flame of love and the ephemeral nature of passions. Oil on panel, 58 x 87.5 cm. Three horizontal boards. On the reverse, six small reinforcing cleats. (Some small gaps, restorations and oxidation). Expert : M. Patrice Dubois
